Default Fees For FFL Transfers

What does your local FFL dealer charge to accept a gun purchase transfer? A local pawn shop near me charges $35. The LGS charges $25. Those prices aren't bad. These prices include the background check call. Another LGS charges $55. That is out- rageous. I seriously think that some of these guys can't see beyond the current sale in front of them. My best friend is a retired gun shop owner. I worked for him for a few uears doing his books. Anyway, he charged nothing to accept a fire arm. He did it for free as a service. As a result, these customers would always come back and spend money. He made up for his "loss" of charging zero for a transfer by increased sales from the customers he did the transfer for. I will never use the shop that charges $55 for a transfer. In fact, I don't see how they get any business at all. Give your customers good and friendly service and don't over charge and they will come back and spend even more. Wow! What a concept.

I know some shops charge more depending on where it comes from i.e. Buds. I charge $15 but most around here are $25. When your friend was a shop owner what year was it? He probably made money on accessories and ammo. It's harder for mom and pop brick and mortars to compete with places like Buds, CTD and these other big internet dealers who a selling guns for cheaper than we (as dealers) can get them wholesale. I know a couple of dealers who have bought from Buds and added a couple bucks to make something because it was cheaper than the wholesaler. On another note gun owners can be some of the cheapest SOBs out there....

My current favorite LGS charges $20 for a long gun and $30 for a handgun. The extra $10 on handguns is due to WI's state background check fee on said guns.

This LGS is very reasonable in his fees.

My LGS charges $25 for transfers, but another one nearby charges $40.I expect the one that charges $40 to be closing his doors pretty soon, the prices on everything in his store is MSRP or higher.

I just picked up my new 1911 at my local range as both my other FFLs are out of town the next few weeks, and I paid $45 in fees before the $15 NICS call charge, $60 total. Brutal.

If you go over to gunbroker.com, on their home page is a "find a ffl" function. Put in your zip, and it pulls up dealers that have registered as being willing to accept a transfer. Around here, some charge $15, average is $25, some charge $100.

To me, it would seem a great opportunity to sell that buyer ammo, cleaning gear, a holster, etc. I DO understand the need to pay for the time and overhead of the shop, but- DUDE? $100???

my LGS usually charges $25 for FFL transfers. i have that availability, but as he will order just about anything i want or need, so far i haven't used his services yet. but i keep it in the back of my mind when browsing the gun auctions online, just in case i find something that can't be ordered new.
