I have a question, how to I get my wife to be OK with strangers coming over to the house for gun transfers? Having strangers coming over and thus knowing where we live and that we have guns on-site makes her nervous. She told me that if I can meet the buyers elsewhere that I can proceed but if not then to find another side business. Some how I don't think that is quite legal so I guess I will have to do something else. |

I have to say the interactions we have had with industry inspectors and even some agents has been positive. We have often had to communicate and work with the local office and they are friendly and helpful, as much as the other agencies we work with.
The many other dealers I have talked to have also had positive experiences or at least few and rarely negative. __________________ NRA Instructor and FFL in Central Ohio.

In my 30+ years with an FFL (out of my home) with 3100+ transactions, I have never found the ATF people to be anything but professional and courteous. No lawyers nor LEO present. I have had two audits; both were thorough and detailed, but nothing close to being accusitive or hostile. In fact, the inspector showed me ways to modify my recordkeeping to make it easier for me. I have also had 8-10 trace calls over the years. |

It looks like the person ranting deleted his posts. They were nonsense.
I don't know of any FFL who has had a bad experience with ATF as long as they were playing by the rules.
There are those who would like to become FFL's that sometimes run into problems. The problems are usually with their State or local laws and zoning requirements, not ATF. |

I applied for & received my FFL in May 2006. The ATF has not been very helpful to me, I have never been told or even shown how to fill out even one form. During the interview portion the ATF agent spent more time giving me reasons why I should not have an FFL than actual showing me how to keep records for the ATF. As a result, I began keeping my 4473 forms in clear plastic folders kept in loose-leaf notebooks. Now my current ATF liason officer(they change my liason officer every year or so) tells me that she doesn't like the way I store records as it takes her too much time to pull each individual 4473 form out to check it over. I am getting the feeling that it is really my choice as to how I decide to store the paperwork and so I have not changed anything. Besides, this particular agent seems to be a real bitch, at least that is what other FFL's in my area say. I actually learned to fill out my A&D Book by referring to the examples in and on the back of the book. I have had two accounting sessions and I even got to meet the ATF downtown due to my large amount of paperwork errors last time around (seems I missed checking off several boxes on the 4473 forms) I couldn't wait for the ATF to try & pull my license, so I applied for & received a second FFL, this one based on Manufacturing, with that license I found I could continue business, in the event the ATF pulled my first license...

I have never heard of a liasion officer...and I did not expect, ask for, or receive any help from ATF in my original application in 1980. Maybe things have changed in the recent past.
I do know that there is a "magic number" (unknown to me) of entries you must reach in three years before a renewal application will be approved. I had about 325 in my last 3-year license renewal. As someone noted earlier, about 75% of those were transfers and 25% purchases for buyers.
The Colorado Legislature passed a law earlier this year creating a new category on the 4473 along with Approval, Denial, and Delay. It is called an Indefinite Delay during which time the FFL can make the transfer if he/she wishes...or can choose to Deny it. I had one person recently pass the NICS check, but fail the state check with an Indefinite Delay. I asked the reason and (naturally) the state would not tell me; so I declined to make the transfer. It was later changed to an Approval, and I did another Background Check and the person passed and took possession of the gun. Last edited by ref441; 11-13-2010 at 10:22 PM. |

ref441 I don't know about amount of entries, I just started book #9, I have sold many guns, but I go to the gun shows and unlike your pick to "deny" your client, I always will guess in my customer's favor. I do this because I believe that the second amendment should not be infringed, I am sure you feel somewhat the same way. I guess I am less worried about selling a gun to someone who will be using it to kill innocent people than I am that someone who really needs a gun (for self protection) might not receive it.
I was Denied the right to own a gun after 15 years of constantly being Delayed. The FBI's records were over 15 years out of date in my case & that is pretty much up-to-date for them. I have less respect for the people assigned to "Protect Us" than I ever did. When my customer becomes "Delayed" I explain why & give out a brochure that shows them how to fix that problem. Also after the four business days pass I immediately notify that person & let them know they can get their gun now.
The last info I saw showed that the FBI/NICS Denied 8,000 Citizens For No Reason & in the same year only Denied 6,500 legitimate people. I think that sucks, why do these idiots get to continue having a job?? Last edited by billdeserthills; 11-13-2010 at 11:16 PM. |
