World War 1 Artillery Shell Relic
Would this be the place or is there another forum somewhere else to see if someone can identify a World War 1 artillery shell. I know this way out of the realm of small guns.. I'm just looking for a place to drop some poor pictures and some rough measurements that might help to identify this relic.

World War 1 Artillery Shell Relic
I assume this is artillery. It is only approx. 6.6 inches in overall length. It has a bullet diameter of 3.82 x 1.43. So I think it is small caliber artillery but I'm just guessing.

It has etched on it...Verdunn...November 11 1918 on one side. On the other is....Vosges, St. Mihiel, Argonne, Verdunn Aug 16 1918 to Nov 16 1918. I have these poor quality picture also.

A very basic google search turned up that it was probably a french artillery shell like the ones used in the early 1900's in the battle of Verdunn, France.

The base of the shell brass has....37-85 PDPs 243 9.16 and then a mark that looks like and exploding bomb. The cap has.....L358 16

Thanks very much. I didn't even know what to do a search on.

World War 1 Artillery Shell Relic
Any idea as to a value? Some collector might be interest I would think. Just being a 1918 relic would give it some value surely. But I have no idea about such a thing.

If that is indeed a French artillery shell be very, very careful ..... as it is probably unfired! :p
j/k - pretty cool piece of history |
It's primer is gone and the fuse has been leaded in(or at least that's what it looks like). Thanks though.

It might be French manufacture, or U.S. manufacture. An expert could tell from the markings on the base, but I'm not an expert. I think these rounds usually sell in the $50-$100 range. EDIT - Evidently this particular shell was French manufacture - here's a link - http://www.specialistauctions.com/auctiondetails.php?id=1143627 |
