Yes the Arisaka uses .311 bullets like the Enfield and Mosin. You can cut down .30-06 brass and run it though the 7.7 sizer. I use to pull surplus 7.62x54 bullets and load those in the cut down '06 brass to make ammo.

Shortened Handguard?

I have looked at an arisaka before that had a long barrel, and the furniture went up to just past the bolt. I was told it was from a jap sniper, but I'm not sure. I have seen pics of the same setup, online. I was thinking that it may have been an attempt to sporterize it, but it hadn't been messed with since it was brought back to the states from the pacific. It had no mum, so it was captured.

The T38 and T97 sniper had short handguards but they were in 6.5x50.... The only T99's I know that have them are the Long Type 99, or last ditch ones.

Yours would have to be really early if it still has the AA sight wings... Might be a long T99?? Gotta see some pics!

I have never heard that one. The rifles surrendered to the Axis powers after the war had the "Mums" ground off. Rifles surrendered in battle had the "Mums" in tacked. The way collectors segregate actual battle field captures from surrendered post war guns is the presence or absence of the "Mums".
The surrender treaty allowed the Japanese to grind this Coat Of Arms before turning arms to the victors. I have never heard of captured guns being required a "Mum" removal ??

Stalker, you are correct. Arms captured in combat- Mum. Arms surrendered at the end of the war, Mum defaced.
