My wife purchased a Russian capture k98 for me three yrs ago for my birthday and it is my favorite rifle to shoot. Had a good crown on the barrel. Rifling in the barrel looked brand new. Action was smooth and bluing was in good shape.I think my rifle had been captured refurbished and stored in cosmoline for a lot of years. three years ago you could buy a k98 for around 200 dollars now I see them for 399. With a timney trigger and reloads its amazing how these old rifles will shoot. I would take my k98 hog hunting any day of the week
All Soviet capture Rifles went through Ivans program. Some shoot well, some don't. Yours should have what looks to be black paint on the metal, not blueing.

The main thing I look for in a Russian capture K98k is bore condition. These rifle were plentiful a few years ago bought now finding a decent example is more difficult. I have acquired several nice ones and sometimes under that awful shellac you'll find a quite nice stock like this dou45 one. The best place to find one these days are probably on an auction site.

Nice rifle, but the stock is not a 1945 DOU. The '45 was a semi kriegs. This is a 1945 DOU semi kriegs. Not a Soviet capture, but a post war Czech.
I like the idea that you found a sight hood and are taking the stock slowly. If you are looking for the correct stock let my know. It will look like mine with the hole in the butt plate to take down the bolt.

I was just happy the Russians put a semi kriegsmodell stock on it when they rearsenalled it. And under the shellac was a nice unstained example. My rarest RC was an SWP45 with the sheetmetal rear sight, but that one had the wrong stock also.
This is second Mauser K98k both RC! On this here beauty there seems to be a half struck X meaning a RC but as you can see theres highly visible German markings and Proof stamps. When I saw this rifle which was owned by a friend of my wife! It was a women that new I enjoyed shooting and lucky me she asked that if I'd be interested? And clearly when this gem to me at least was placed in my hands, I told her that I love it and have to have it. She first asked me of I knew what it was? It was hard not to wanna say" O that's just an old junk WWII Mauser" My honest opinion was given to her stating that this is indeed an old WWII Mauser but these marking a little more special than others! I then showed her some literature on line which quickly explained that its value is some greater than the so called norm of other RC. Bore was bright and terrific. The rifling had some tooling marks and wasn't the best. But those glowing stamps alone could possibly tell one with little knowledge what it is that their looking at! I told her that 5yrs ago I bought the same Mauser(RC) with few German marked parts for 180$ it was then quoted from her and knowing full well what it is that she has was a price of 360$ and replied to say I have only 4-100$ bills and to keep the change! Is this a steel? I'm no expert to know much if not any about Mauser value at all. I had to have it then and didn't have much time to seek an accurate $ of worth. The idea of leaving and waiting just wasn't gonna happen!
