It's an austrian made c&r rifle that shoots 8x56R ammo. JG Sales has them for $90, so you are getting a GREAT deal on it. I don't know how they shoot, but it would be nice to collect either way.
If you want a dependable shooter, look for a russian made mosin nagant. They can be found for $75 to $150 and will be fun and dependable to shoot! |

Your biggest problem will be finding ammo for it. It's still the least pricey of the milsurps, but no bullets = no gun. Big 5 doesn't seem to carry the ammo. I was in Big 5 today and see that the 91/30 is also on sale. A few dollars more, but the ammo is available on the shelf there. __________________ 9x18=Makarov |

+1 on the ammo. I believe Wolf makes it still, but surplus is difficult at best to find. |

I also saw they had the 91/30 on sale for a good price. If they weren't 2 hours away from me, I'd pick one up today! That's a fair deal for one. |

Unless you reload like me. Then they aren't much more than any other ammo. I got brass and Hornady soft point bullets from Graf And Sons. I use the same powder (H4895) to reload both my 8X56R and my 7.62X54R for my Mosins. |

Yes, but the OP doesn't seem like he's someone who's ready to get into handloading. If the price was his original motivation for buying the Steyr, I doubt he'd be much willing to put out the money to get a complete setup to start making his own ammo. If he was going to buy no other rifle except that one, then I'd encourage him to get the press, dies, and components.... __________________ 9x18=Makarov |
