Default smith & wesson

I have acquired on old Smith 44 cal. Maybe a "Russian". On the but stock it is stamped 1874 with a serial number 4212. Barrel is 6 3/8". Looking for help on how I might trace more information on this specififc handgun.
Thanks Bill

Well Bill,
My first guess would be to head over to the Smith & Wesson site, I think they have a section on this particular gun
