You could not tell that from its history in WWI. They were not able to run dirty and some Canadian soldiers were killed or injured when the bolts blew back into their heads. The British had been fighting wars for a long time and they had it right with the SMLE.

Hint- neither rimfire, centerfire, nor pinfire- and it is not ball & cap. Loading it is somewhat.....contrary.

So I'm going to say rocket ball ammo. Now the only gun I know that fires rocket ball is the Volcanic Lever Action pistol.
Something from Volcanic Arms is my guess.

The revolver is INDEED a Merwin & Bray, in caliber .30 Plant Cupfire. The rear of the cartridge is cup shaped, and the hammer strikes the edge of the cup on the inside. Cartridges are pressed into the front of the cylinder, and ejected using the slide rod.
The rounds that are neither rim nor center are rather scarce- most were made for only a few years. They include pinfires, cup fires, teatfires, lipfires and Crispins- raised ring of primer material halfway down the case.
Interesting little "blind alley" in cartridge development. The "Rocket Ball" was an early caseless self contained cartridge- sort of a mine ball w/ the hollow fileld with powder, and a dot of priming material at rear center.
