I traded a SKS for this today....
Its a Springfield 1903, serial is in the 1,400,000 range, the barrel has the date 5-33. Looks like everything is matches. The stock has a few stamps in it, looks to be inspection marks? Does anybody know what variant this is? Whats the deal with the rear sight? It looks like theres a aperture and 2 notches on the ladder sight when fliped up ( one is above the aperture in a "triangle" cutout, the other on the bar that raises the sight on the ladder)

Shot a few rounds outta of it today, and its very accurate. I would have to say its one of the nicer mil-surps ive shot... It kinda puts the Mosin and Arisaka to shame... ;)

I will post better pics tomorrow.....

Used to drill with one of those in Boot Camp! Yea, I know how old that makes me!!

the purpose of the rear site is for volley fire into massed troops at extreme ranges in order to cause wounds. entire companies were supposed to set slightly different ranges aim at a general area and launch volleys like ancient archers at ranges up to nearly 3000 yards.

Congratulations on the excellent purchase.

But why does the ladder have 3 different "notches" in addition to going up and down? I could see a aperture and 1 notch... but why are there 2 notches?

You scored Trez. That '03 is worth much more than an SKS.

I can't help on the sight question though.

I love my Mosin, but I'd really love to have one of those. American made, and just the turned down bolt is enough by itself. I found one for $300, but I passed because it was just too bubbafied. Chopped up like crazy.

Now if I could come across that damn IHC M1!! :p

I love the sights.. I dont know how to describe it but they are "easier" to aim than foreign mil-surps.. It just seems the US put a little more effort into their guns.....

Found this on the sights, apparently theres 5 sight notches!
