It was Christmas 1955..I was 6 years old...shopping at Emery, Bird &Thayer department store in Kansas City with my mom and dad...in the sporting goods area were tables full of Enfield, Springfield and Mauser rifles...NONE priced over $20.00....dad said "we should buy one each for the boys, they may want to go hunting some day."......I watched with tense anticipation....then mother burst the bubble with a stern "NO....AND WHAT IS THAT BROWN GREASE ALL OVER THEIR HANDS?".....dad was in trouble and I began a long fascination with old military firearms.....just reminiscing folks.....sorry.
