So it's a shellac? So if I strip it, it'll look like it did before refurbishment?

If you strip it it will be bare wood. If that is it in the picture I wouldn't touch it...that finish is gorgeous as is.

There are several threads and vids on getting back to the original issue look. It's not easy, many of the original oils and shellacs are no longer available or difficult to work with. From what I understand the stock needs to be stripped to bare wood, treated with linseed oil then a red flake shellac is dissolved in turpentine of some other solvent and applied to the wood. Top coat is an amber shellac. Alternate for the look without 100% authenticity are red mahogany stain and tung oil.
I have a Chi-Com type 53 that is beat to hell that I am going to refinish using the red mahogany. Different wood than the Mosin but should take the stain ok. If that works next up is a '42 Izhevsk that is pretty rough.

Ok does anyone know anything about it have a Turkish Mauser? I've seen them for $150-$180 on gunbroker and it would be my 1st Mauser. I've seen one for $200 on Armslist an hour from me.

I got a offer for a Chinese SKS this morning for $300-400 (not quite sure what he meant by that) and it looks good, but I've been wondering whats te differance between the "junk"made-for-export SKS and the good military ones? I know the type 56 is the military one, but what about the Norinco ones? I've heard that if they have a factory code and 3 Chinese letters before the serial number than it's a non-junk one

I FINALLY AM GETTING ONE!!!!! I'm finally getting a SKS!!! After many disappointments and searching, I finally made a deal for a Russian SKS for a trade for a Mossberg 500A and $75 boot. It's TAPCO-ed, but comes with a new gas piston and reciever cover and top rail. I'm looking to restore it. I'm so excited, I meet him Wednesday.
