Default Mosin Nagant question

Bought a 91/30 over the weekend. A 1939 tula. Impressed how it shot with cheap spam can ammo. I am considering taking it deer hunting this fall. I dont hunt deer as much to invest in a $300 deer rifle. I honestly maybe get 4 days a year to hunt. My question is if anyone found a good soft point 7.62x54r ammo brand they like? I am using stock sights now and may keep it that way. But I was looking into scout scope mount to replace rear sight. Any of those any good? Thanks.

I bought one that mounts to the rear sight mount , it is a real POS. I am having a friend machine a rail that pins onto an extra sight base I bought for that purpose. Scopes are on a UPS truck, suppose to be here Friday. The rail should be done Monday or tues. Cant wait to see what this gun will rsally do with a scope. Best groups I got with irons were between 2 and 3 MOA.

Russian made 203gr works great. No real reason for a scope.

S&B is decent, as is Prvi Partisan, Lapua, etc etc. Really any main brand soft point will do for deer. 200+ grain will work for MOOSE! Heavy ball will likely shoot to a different POI than the light Czech stuff, so DO take time to zero your rifle.

Great, the Russian made 203gr fixes my need for corrective lenses?

I have found that certain lenses (compounds) don't work well when shooting irons/scopes. I've worn glasses since I was 7. I know what you are going through, trust me. There is a new lens that is progressive for those that are near sighted, and can't read w/ standard lenses. You may want to ask about it.

Sorry about jumping all over the OP's thread. JP, I do have progressive lenses. I can see the rear sight very clearly without glasses, that is about the limit of my noncorrected vision. When I add the glasses, I get either the rear and front sight or the front sight and the target with minimal clarity. The third part of the sight picture is very blury. I've learned to alternate until I am fairly confident with the shot. I can shoot a 2-3 MOA group with irons sometimes. I know my short commings. I just want to make the gun be all it can be. I too believe everyone should learn to shoot with irons before they use a scope. I never owned a scoped rifle until my late 30's. I don't remember when I started shooting but I think it was 7 or 8.

Any possibility of mounting a peep sight on the receiver or maybe a ghost ring on the battle sight? I am a 4 eyes too and open battle sights are difficult for me as well but I do OK with peeps.
