Unless you get it at a show then yes, listen to Cane, if it is C&R eligible, a license is a great thing to have.

They have to be 50 years old or older Sputnik.

As to the OP, I wholeheartedly agree with Cane, get both.

Here is my local gun store

http://www.ammoattic.com/id70.html

Do I have to have my C&R to buy them from the store? Or is it online only. And are these prices fair as far as ammo wise?

Now, they do have them out in the open so you can look at them all. What should I look at to find the best one? I'm sort of worried about getting one because I don't want ammo to not be available. Where .22lr can be found at walmart..

IMHO, if you're going to get only one, the Mauser is a better

weapon.

Consider that for accuracy, you will want to get better ammo

than milsurp, regardless. So the "cheaper" Mosin ammo is

not that accurate, anyway.

Accuracy depends on the individual rifle. Both are built like tanks assuming you are talking a 1898 action Mauser. The '93,'94,'95, and '96 Mausers are still very robust rifles, but are not as strong as a '98. They are also cock on close. I love my Swede '94 and '96 actions. Smooth as glass. Each has pro's and cons. As stated above, get both.
