I freakin love cmp. I only live about 45 minutes from the south store in Anniston, AL. If anyone ever rides down to visit them let me know and I'll buy dinner and a beer or 2.

They have some field grade ones for $525. I'd take a Garand for that price, anyday. For about $50 more, you can get a better one, but all of them work.

Be warned many Field Grades are in need of a rebarrel. I have handled many hundreds of them and alot of the barrels are worn out with Muzzle Wear of 6 or more but still fall within the Grade description
Dont get me wrong if you can handpick Field Grades are worth a look but I would not take a chance on mail order. Yes some guys get nice ones but many are dogs
The next grade up it $625 Service Grade and IMO well worth the extra $100

I would love to take a look at and see if I could find a Garand I would like, but I have zero interest in marksmanship competitions. However, I do plan to get the MS "enhanced" concealed carry permit in the near future; I wonder if that would satisfy their Marksmanship requirement per

You can qualify to buy from CMP by joining the Garand Collectors Association. You get a nice magazine with news about Garands and CMP. I think it is pretty easy and not all that expensive. Check out their web site:www.thegca.org

Joining the GCA only fullfills club membership portion of qualifications you still need proof of firearms handling
While the GCA is a good club and the mag is nice in my opion there are better options if you want cheap club membership
With the GCA their membership runs from Sept -August no matter when you join. If you join today you will only get 4 1/2 months membership for your $25
I recommend the M1 Collectors Club, its only $14 for a full year from the date you join. No magazine ,just good cheap way to fullfill club membership and a much better deal IMO

You do not have to be a competitive shooter to buy from CMP. There are a number of ways for meeting the firearms experience requirement. I use my CCW permit.
The South store is a better choice for shopping. The folks are very helpful.
