I did some further research. It should be an FG, FH, or FJ. What it started as is anyones guess.

I read that too. But I've seen other 36-51s with single letter prefixes. So they were possibly just rearsenaled 36s. I mean by the mid-50s most countries were adopting the FAL and other select fire rifles, but this didn't stop most countries, so I'm not too sure.

Everybody but the French, they used the MAS 49 & the 49/56 clear up to 1979 !...............

Thank you for all the feedback I received! I'm going to negotiate the price and shipping with him this week. I think it's a great price for a rifle you don't see everyday. I've handled a MAS 36 before, and the bolt is odd, and is blocky looking, but they have a strong action! IIRC, it's a combination of the Lee-Enfield, Mauser, and M1917/P14 action system. I like the round being similar to a .308, and I can reload the round too. I like the wear too, honest wear. Again, thank you all for your help and insight!
