That was its original purpose, but it was such a good weapon in such a light package its utility grew far beyond that. M1 carbines were carried by our airborn troops in WW2. Audie Murphie's favorite gun was an M1 carbine, he used to stalk German snipers with his. The cartridge may be small for a rifle but keep in mind it is still more powerful than a .357 magnum.

The gas cutting occurs when gas passes an undersized bullet under pressure. The hot gases melt the lead leaving dropplets of melted lead to stick in the bore and load the gas port. Cast bullets are cast and sized by pressure not velocity.
I know this is an older thread but i have a winchester m1 and was wondering if i reload with the laser cast bullets offered for the 30 carbine would be good for me to reload em?The price and availability has dried up and skyrocketed i have brass. anyone know? i dont want to get into casting just yet but have used laser cast in my 44-40 and 45 pistols
