The SVT was a full-size battle rifle that shot a full size round, the 7.62x54R.

The assault rifle was a intermediate rifle that shot a intermediate round.

On a time line the 30M1 would have been the first by one year. The German MP-43, MP-44,SVG-44 were behind the M1 Carb. 1942 by one year. My vote for the first Assault rifle was the MP-43 & 44 Select fire 500 RPM chambered in 7.92 X 33 Ctg. The Sturmgwehre was a true light machine gun for issue to infantry.

The idea behind the M1 30 Carb. was a replacement for handguns in "Panic" shooting defensive use. The Nazi MP-44 was designed for attack by fast moving offensive or assault units.

The Russian liked it so much they copied it and called it the AK-47. The Russian also took home all the Germans in door flushable toilets. They had no running water. The Communist were not idea people.

I forgot about the intermediate cartridge for an assault rifle, but the STG-44 is the first (in today's terms) assault rifle, semi/full auto, intermediate cartridge and good rate of fire

Initially, the M1 carbine was intended to have a select-fire capability, but in order to speed development of the adopted design, a decision was made to omit this feature. On 26 October 1944, in response to increased use of automatic fire weapons on the battlefield like the German Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle, the select-fire M2 carbine was adopted, along with a new 30-round magazine. The M2 had a fully automatic rate-of-fire of about 850-900 rounds-per-minute.

Define an assault rifle. My definition of the worlds first assault rifle is the first rifle that assaulted someone. Probably a blackpowder smoothbore.

The M1 Carb was designed as a handgun replacement for "Panic" shooting. The handgun was found to be ineffective in fast responce defensive combat. The MP-43 rifles were designed as offensive weapons for offensive attack combat. The 30 M1 Ctg. was very light for attack weapons of combat. The MP 44 series rifles firing the 7.92X33 were useful infantry assault weapons. The Russians used the MP 44 design and reduced the round to a 7.62X36 MM Ctg. Too bad I think the Nazi 8MM Kurtz would have worked great in the AK47.

The M2 variation was by definition Americas' first true assault rifle. And while it got a bad rap for lack of stopping power during the Korean war it was popular and effective in the close quarters jungle fighting in Viet Nam. It was very popular during the early years of the war before the M16 come online.

Americas first assault rifle? Why not choose the M-14 it served until being replaced by the M 16 not the M1 Carb. The M1 Carb was never issued as a primary arm for troops in any war. The M-14 has a removable Mag. selectfire using a mid level Ctg. for that day the .308. The M-14 was not designed to replace the 1911 pistol.
