Ya did good, now get you some ammo and a recoil pad The No.5s have quite a bit more recoil than a No.1 or No.4.

Prvi Partizan has good .303, I got some surplus stuff from the guy who runs my local mil-surplus store, some Pakistani, some South African, some British, but mainly Australian. 60-65 rounds for $50 all on original stripper clips

Make sure you put boiling water down the barrel after using military ammo an dthen dry it out and then clean the barrel as usual.
Federal make commercial ammo for .303's or you can brew your own up which I do,regards

Warm water with soap works fine, you don't need, nor would I use, boiling water.... just my $.02.
I normally use REM oil and clean thoroughly, works just fine.

Never had a problem just pouring boiling hot water down the barrel as it virtually dry's out not long after but I still put a dry patch down the barrel to get any water left down there and then run solvent and patch it out from there.
My father used to do it this way and a couple of his brothers who served in New Guinea during WW2 said that this was the way they cleaned their SMLE's as well.
A lot of shooters on the Aussie forum I'm a member of do it this way after using military ammo not the commercial stuff and haven't had a problem so your method obviously works for you and really that's all that matters as long as the rifle is kept serviceable and shoots well, regards
