K98 build range report

I finally took my repro K98 sniper out to play. The snow is pretty much gone and the temp was in the high '40's, spring is coming fast. W/ the scope set at 100 meters, I was 1 foot low. That made me a little unhappy. Windage was dead on. I dialed it up to 400 meters to be on at 100 meters. I was shooting Prvi 196gr sp ammo. There was no real recoil to speak of. A good push, but not the shoulder hammering I was expecting. Even at the 400 meter setting I was 2" low. The reticule was in the top 1/3 of the glass when set at 100, came closer to the center of the picture at 400. When I got home I took a hard look at the Zielvier scope to figure out how to set the cam correctly. It has a focus knob on top of the turret. I had to reset the cam on both my Hensoldt Z24 and Ajack, so it had to be the same principal. I drove the pin that holds the focus adjustment out, removed the 3 screws that hold the dial down and had her finished in a few minutes. I'll lock her down on the next trip and really fine tune her. It was really very simple overall. A few measurements using only the cam and adjusting ring, made the adjustment to the ring and I was in business. She now stops dead on 800, were she should be. I can adjust her further with little effort when I fine tune her. The Germans had it right in the design of the Zielvier, Ajack and Hensoldt, that is for sure. It so simple as even a math deficient person like myself could figure it out in just a few minutes. I am very stoked about this build. It is meeting all my expectations. I'm going to take out my M41b, PU 91/30 and K98 high turret on my next trip.

I posted pics before!!! I'll chalk my former success w/ her to dumb luck. I'm going to bring 175gr handloads, 196gr commercial, and 198gr surplus next time. All should hit within an inch of each other.

Sounds like a plan.

Shouldn't this be in the "Range Report" part of the forum?

Since part of the discussion was about adjusting the original 4x Zeilvier 39 model scope to get her to shoot POA, it is better served here. Modern commercial scopes have very little in common w/ these caliber specific military scopes. The scope design is 1939, the Rifle is a K98k, so it fits well here.
