I have the opportunity to purchase a 1944 production of this rifle in carbine version. The local dealer has a price tag of $200.00 on it but he might come down some. Personally, I think the price is a bit high. How great are these? I am not interested in hunting with it except perhaps for some fun shooting. Nothing serious!

What has been your experience with this rifle? I think it is the same kind that president Kennedy was shot with?

He IS high unless the rifle is in museum quality condition. Take a hard look at the bore- the ammo for those was corrosive primed, lot of those with pitted bores. Also the rifle uses an "en bloc" sort of clip. Without those, you have a single shot. When the MILSURP ammo was cheaper than BBs, and the rifles are $20, it was a good deal. Milsurp ammo has gone away.

Plus side- moderate recoil, decent accuracy if you have a good barrel.

Offer him $125 in cash and see if he geeks.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it for $200. But it never hurts to try to talk them down. I was looking at them and the avg price i seen was $225

When Oswald shot JFK those sold for $12 dollars or $18 bucks with a scope. The rifles were junk and the scopes were like looking at the world thru a dirty coke bottle. They have not improved over the past 50 years.
Save the $200 dollars and invest it in something that you can use.
