Default How old

An 80 yr old friend has his mothers old shotgun and would like to know its age.It is a model -94B- 410 ga springfield manufactured by J Stevens arms company in chickapee n.y. As it has no serial number I think he has no chance. What say you?

well the company was in business from 1888 to 1920 when it was bought out by savage arms.
with the models produced betweeen 1948-1968 theres a letter code stamped behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger gaurd.

If I remember right, J Stevens in N.Y. was manufacturing shotguns for Sears and Roebuck since the 1890s or something like that. I would guess the early 1900s? Try to look for smokeless powder proof marks on the piece and that can narrow the time frame! I will check some other sources and get back to you with any information that I can gather! Good Luck!

more information. The fellows mother got the gun when she was 12 and he is 81. Under the fore end there are stamped the following, a dominant d v,then to the right and slightly higher there is a B in a circle, then to the right and slightly above is an I in a circle, about half way to the fore end clip there is an A. The fellow is somewhat of a history buff so he would love to know about his mothers 410. He thanks you all for the effort. I am only a little younger then him and I have converted him into a full fledged gun nut.

It was J. Stevens and Co from 1864-1886. It was J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. from 1886-1915. J. Stevens Arms Co. from 1915-1940. Stevens from 1940-1991.
