As said above, I've heard CMP usually under-grades their rifles, and you may get a better one than you've ordered. One of their $600 M1 Garands is HIGH on my list of guns to get.

Get the highest grade M1 you can afford.

Get a high quality M1907 sling for it. Get the wax needed to maintain the sling. I've been impressed with my Turner Saddlery sling.

A well built M1 is a fantastic rifle, or at least mine is, and of all the rifles I own, it's the most fun to shoot. I purchased my rifle with a Krieger Criterion chrome lined barrel. Don't fall in love with the metal and the wood, fall in love with the rifle. Some modern parts are built better than the originals. The barrels would fall into that category.

Hope you have plenty of money for ammo. It's expensive.

1) I can afford any of them it is just a matter of saving enough cash.

2) I want the gun to be accurate enough for my use and it looks like the service grade will be and is also the cheapest available.

3) enough to afford my shooting wants and needs.

Also thanks to everyone for their advice.

I found one in excellent condition at Cabela's in Dundee, Michigan. It's in the gun library and they want $1,200 for it.

If just a shooter and not a collector rifle, that is double of what you would pay at CMP

I would go with the service grade...Back in 1982 I got M1 Garand from the DCM which preceded the CMP. There were no grades...just the luck of the draw. Mine is a SA from 1943 which I would grade as service grade by today's standards. It was refurbished sometime after the war at a plant in California. Mine cost a whopping $149.00. A very nice and accurate old timer. Also got a Saginaw M1 carbine from the CMP..service grade several years ago with no problems. Here's a few pics of both rifles. Regards Dick

Panic buyers have them swamped. They cant keep up with regular orders so they wont be released until they are.
