Chilean Mauser in 7.62 Nato

Purchased one on GB for $250 (+$35 for shipping).

Do they normally hold up to .308 (commercial) rounds?

It is a small ring '95 action. It will shoot .308, but you will damage the rifle over time. I'd stick w/ 7.62x51.

The original chambering was 7 X 57. Max pressure 51,000 psi

.308 Win max pressure 62,000 psi

11,000 psi is one heck of a lot. I would not recommend shooting ANY .308 Win ammo through it. 7.62 X 51 (NATO) is a safer bet.

You could always handload and drop your powder charge by 10%. Shoot 150 grain bullets through it. Handloading your own is less expensive than purchasing milspec ammo anyway. Besides it's fun.

.308 win is no problem. Just read this article. .308 Winchester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Especially this part.

Although very similar to the military 7.62x51mm NATO, specifications for the .308 cartridge are not identical and there are special considerations that may apply when mixing one cartridge with differently chambered arms.[5] Their interchange is considered safe by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI)

It is true if shooting 7.62x51 through a .308 chambered rifle, but not the other way.

Do what you want w/ your rifle. The '95 action is not up to the task. Sorry, JMHO. Sammi and Nato spec are quite different.

Thanks Gentlemen!

The action will be fine. This has been travelling the internet for a while. I have never seen or even heard of an example of this action failing when shooting .308 Win. If SAAMI says they are interchangeable that is good enough for me. They would take any litigation into account before stating this. Google Stiga rifles. They were even chambered in 30-06. The only issue you may have to worry about is the stock. Lastly, if a Lee-Enfield action can be safely rechambered to .308 then the 95 action is golden.

Can you shoot .308 commercial ammo through this rifle? Yes. Is it a good idea? Absolutely not! If you are fond of your face. Use caution and stick to the NATO ammo.

Thanks for the info Robo, but I was mistaken on the Mauser.
It is a Spanish Mauser from Oviedo chambered for 7.62 NATO.

(And I did get some 7.62 NATO from a co-worker who shot the m14 in military competitions.)
