You can get barrel manufacturers to custom turn whatever profile you want. Might not be cheap though.

The one Mauser that I had that I kick myself for selling was a k98 that had been an Isreali IDF rifle rebarreled and chambered for 7.62 NATO. It was a little rough on the exterior but the bite was bright and it hit anything I aimed it at out to 300yds at least.

So a .308 barrel is not out if the question.

Hang out with the anti gun libs a little, or take it to a gunsmith.

There are 98 barrels and barreled actions all over the internet. If you want a new looking k98 that isnt a mongral, buy one, it can't be built. Most origional 98s in the condition you want will be great shooters and will cost less than having an expensive copy built. It seems kind of hipocritically ironic that you won't buy one from a company that has built thousands but you want to build one from miscelaneous parts and think you can end up with a superior rifle. I suppose it is a remote possibility but very doubtful. Cheaper, No!

You guys havent considered that maybe he just wants to build a Mauser 98 for the fun of it? I have a couple of projects that arent worth fixing, but I do it because I want to and its good practice.

I can never find a gunsmith thats willing to work on my guns, so Ive been forced to become my own gunsmith...

I agree. Who knows he might like it so much that he could turn into a gun smith. Nothing better then setting back and say "I did that".

Exactly, my SKS wasnt worth fixing either, but I did it anyway. It still will never be a collectable, but I got some experience and a good shooter.

A lot of satisfaction on the first trip to the range with a project. I buy bubba guns and broken guns for projects.
