Default Plans for AOW's?

Is anyone aware of any plans for AOW's like a Home Depot .22/shotgun made with steel pipe? Is the ATF granting stamps on such items?

AOW- Any Other Weapon, It is a designation for an NFA firearm that is reulated, but not a machine gun, not a short barreled shotgun etc. Examples include a gun made as a smoothbore pistol that fires shotgun shells, or a disguised firearm, such as a cane gun. Unlike the $200 fee for a Short Barreled Shotgun, an AOW has a $5 fee.

And sorry, no, do not have blueprints.

Converting an existing firearm into an "any other weapon" requires a BATFE NFA making tax of $200. I think to create a firearm from scratch would require a license.

We used to call those "zip guns." I'm pretty sure they aren't legal.

It shouldn't so long as you dont make it available for sale and it has a serial number.

Many people make their own guns. As long as it is for the builder's use (not to be sold) and not a restricted firearm(like a full-auto or too short of barrel) it is perfectly legal. No need to involve the BATFE at all. So if you built your own 1911 from scratch it would be perfectly fine(at least on a federal level).

Home Depot does not sell rifled pipe. This is about an improvised smooth bore pistol (zip gun.) Do not get caught with it.

Smoothbore pistols ARE legal- but regulated. If they were made from scratch that way, they are an AOW. If made from another firearm (like cutting down a shotgun) it is an SBS.

Example- this little gem is an Ithaca Auto & Burglar gun. Side by side 12 g. It is NOT a short barreled shotgun- because it began life AS a handgun. It was not a conversion of a shotgun. Even tho it is a smoothbore 12 g.

autoburglar.jpg

Same paperwork as a Short barreled Shotgun, but the Fed Tax on transfer is $5, not $200.

Now, if you want to know WHY there is a difference in the LAW- REALLY? You expect laws like this to make sense. What? Are you new here?
