After some consideration though, I think I might just make a black powder muzzle loader shotgun out of some Schedule 80 (or better) pipe. Keeps the design simple and the pressures several thousand PSI under the rated burst pressure. A notch in the back for a shotgun primer and incorporate a trigger group I already own. It would work just like any percussion cap firearm.
My only concern might be that the primer might not work as intended. In that case, I'd just revert to a single shot contained cartridge design or perhaps come up with some alternative to solve the problem. I just think the muzzle loading design gives it more of an air of legitimacy since you don't have to remove parts to use it, even if the contained cartridge would be easier to use overall.
