.950 handgun
 

I came across these Derringers made by Pekka Helenius, in .50 caliber and 20mm caliber:

He is also planning a 30mm version.
Which made me think...Could a handgun be made to fire .950 JDJ without blowing the gun out of the shooter's hand?

2 things-1st would it even be legal in the USA? And 2nd I seriously doubt you could hold onto it.

1. Yes, with DD tax stamp.
2. This is my major concern. The .950 JDJ round has an energy of 52,450 J and a mass of 230 g, while a .50AE is 1,666-2,200 J with mass 19-21.1 g and .600NE (the strongest handgun cartridge right now) is 11,400 J with mass 58 g. The gun that fires the .600NE weighs 6 kg (13.2 lb). Would my design need to weigh 20-30 kg just to deal with recoil?

It's a self-imposed challenge, to see what is possible.

If someone pulled that out on me I would pee myself just the size of the barrel scares me, wonder what the recoil is like on something like that.

No problem. You just need two barrels that fire at the same time. One pointed North, one pointed South. The recoil should cancel out.
