Of course I'd suggest a school of possible, I went straight out of High School (more or less) no family to worry about. In the 30 years since I've met many a working Smith who apprenticed or took online/mail ( yes there was life and learning before the Internet) courses. I also know of several people I knew in school who never did a day as a working gunsmith in their life. If you love it and work hard at it then ya can't really ask for much more.
Keep up with the trends, avoid the fads, take your time and do work you can be proud of always
