Default trouble removing M1 Garand rear sight

I picked up a garand at an auction last night. Looked to be in pretty good shape. The metal needs some cleaning up, but that was about It. Only when I started taking it apart today did I realize the top of the screw through the windage knob was broken off. I tried boring it with a small easy-out, but couldn't get it. Is there a way to remove the sight assembly without removing that screw? Or am I pretty much screwed? No pun intended.

Is it possible to drill and tap?

Hope this helps. I did try to tap it, but I can't get it to grip. Looks like somebody else had already tried and failed. You can see how it's depressed and the edge is gone on one side

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have lock bar sights,there never was a screw it is staked in place.
It is possible to remove but I would leave it alone before you mess it up anymore.
The Bar actually unscrews of the post that you used a easy out on. It is open /hollow on the end and a secial punch flares it open so it doesnt walk off

I would be very interested to see what other early parts the rifle has.

I'm not too familiar yet with the mechanical specs of the garand or its design evolution, so right now I wouldn't be able to distinguish anything on it. A couple things I did notice was that the rear sling mount is fixed, not hinged like on others I've seen, and the front sight is a simple block and post style, not the typical two prongs and a post type. When I have a chance I'll post a bunch of pics, maybe figure out a little history on it.

All Garand rear swivels are fixed, they never came hinged or to actually swivel
The front sight may have had the wings cut off by Bubba?
If you can post pics I will help you as much as I can.
Also post any drawing numbers that are on the parts.
How many digets in the serial number?

Lol, I do love Bubba customs... Especially on classics. One great thing about the Garand is it's impossible to sporterize
