This was a few years ago and I didn't witness it but they were having a garage sale across the street from my buddy's house and they had an M1 Carbine that they were trying to sell. It was from the old man who had recently passed away. The idiot son and his friends were playing with it, magazine was inserted. etc., they were cycling the bolt and pointing it at each other, at the neighbors houses, etc, and dry firing it. My buddy goes over and grabs it from the one idiot and asks how much they want as he was going to buy it just to keep it out of their ignorant hands. He then drops the mag and it is fully loaded. He shows the idiots and tells them that they were only alive because of the cosmoline had jammed up the mag and prevented it from loading a round. I think he paid $40 for it and kept it for 30 years before giving it to another buddy.

The owner of my local gun shop tried to tell me that I could shoot 5.56 out of my ar15 that has a 223 stamped barrel!! Witch if ur barrel is stamped 556 u can shoot both 223 or 556 but if ur ar is stamped 223 u can not shoot 556.. So he continue to act like he was right untill I pulled out my iPhone an googled it. His face turned red cause he then realized he was Wrong an there was a line of people behind me so I'm sure he felt like a ass lol...

I'll 'fess up. I was a stupid customer once.

My friends wife had an old Baretta pistol from like '54 or something. It had "9" stamped on the side. So I go to the indoor range, buy a box of 9mm rounds, and try to load the mag, but the bullets were too long to load. The gun shop had sold me non jacketed, lead bullets, which I've never used. I go tell the guy the bullets are ****ed up, and too long. Without even looking or blinking, the guy says "you need .380."

Yeah, well, what the hell does he know, right?

I grumble, go back and get the gun, bring it to him. "Look, 9, right here. Your box of bullets are messed up, man."

He looks at me and says, "Dude...this is a .380. I didn't even need to look at it to tell you that."

I look at him and say, "Yeah, well I suffer from a condition in where I'm ****ing retarded."

I felt like a maroon.

Is anyone really surprised considering most people’s ‘knowledge’ of firearms comes from TV & movies?

Absolutely there are many stupid people with firearms, but I think it’s mostly ignorance. I know some here will consider this an infringement, but I believe some proof of knowing & understanding the rules of firearm safety should be required. At the very least, some form of the rules could be conspicuously posted in the gun shops. I.e.; DON'T put your finger on the trigger. DON'T aim the gun at anybody. DON'T wave the gun around in front of people, etc. Something simple and easily read to let people who don't know any better what the minimum standards of gun handling are.

First time I shot a revolver I was kinda nervous and when I had fired the 6 I kept pulling the trigger I thought that something was wrong because I could still see bullets in the gun lol. Plus when I go to the range I get so excited sometimes I'm not paying attention.

The PNW must be a fairly enlightened gun culture because I've never seen anything like these stories in our gun stores.

I have seen my share of stupidity at public ranges but that's another thread.

My local Cabelas has trigger locks on all the long guns tba people can access. Still makes me nervous when people shoulder a gun an point in my direction. One kid did it right next to me and I knocked it aside. Kid got pissy with me and I just told him the rules and stressed that accidents do happen.

Even at the lgs, I can't count how many times I've been swept, even had someone dry fire in my direction. Whenever I'm looking I check the condition even if the guy behind the counter did it.

I've seen a lot of crazy stuff in gun stores. I guess one if the worst was at gander mountain. I was on the other side if the counter from this guy who walked up to the sales associate with a cased long gun of some sort. He wasn't sure of the guns caliber so he brought it in to get some information on it. Several minutes late I noticed the sales associate set a box of ammo up on the counter and then walked off. To my amazement the guy opens the ammo and proceeds to load a round in this rifle right there at the counter!!! Needless to say everybody freaked out and the guy was escorted out of the store. I also witnessed a guy dry fire a PSE bow not once but twice in a local archery shop a few years ago!!!
