Default Sawing off barrels

What can go wrong if I saw off my Remington 870 barrel to a legal 18"?

Why not just buy a spare 18" barrel?

you can ruin your shotgun. the barrel can split if the muzzle isnt square. it can split if you cause a stress crack from sawing.

as above just buy a 18" barrel.

1. You do not quite get the barrel square
2. You square it with a file
3. Since it was not square, barrel is now 17.98 inches
4. As measured by the guys over at the ATF lab.
5. This is Bubba, your new roomate.
6. Ignore the rumor that he killed and ate his last roomy.
7. Well, not ALL of him, anyway.

Seriously, never cut with a pipe cutter- crimps the barrel. Cut with a lathe or power hacksaw. Barrel steel harder than you think. After cutting, needs deburring and recrowning. Did you want front sight on there? Unless you have free access to pretty complete machine shop, and can use the tools, will likely be cheaper to get a second barrel already dolled up.

Give my regards to Bubba.

18.5".

As long as you're confident that you are competent to do it.

So I can't cut the barrel at an angle to make it look like the weapons on HALO or Unreal Tournament? Dang it.....

as most will agree ,if you cant stand it ,measure twice or three times cut once. ive had extra barrels ,had 1 done by a gunshop ....the last one was 28'' vent rib with rem chokes ...sent it of to polychoke .they cut and installed a polychoke with compensator ...looks great total length is 19.5. with 9 settings of choke i have a all in one utility shotgun

you could, but we'd laugh in your direction.

Yes, you can- but just for you, we will make the cut at 180 degrees to the bore. That will allow us to remove the upper half of the barrel. It will make it much lighter, and easier to tell if it is loaded.

What about porting it 3/4 of the way done the barrel to reduce muzzle velocity? But that wouldn't affect velocity down range.
