I would suggest getting a new magazine. The picture of magazine and the spring sure show signs of wear. The number one #1 cause of rifle malfunctions including what you described is the magazine. You can get a new magazine catch spring by calling Savage that one seems to be slightly deformed and bent?
I would try a new magazine that is my bet! But I would also replace the spring while I was at it.
