Savage .270 win re-chamber
I have a savage 111 in .270 win and would like more choices for ammo. Is it possible to rechamber it into a .308? I am planning on a new barrel as it is, so I would like to know if I should be looking for something other than the .270.
Thanks Cory |
Well, if you check the length of a .308, and the length of a .270........and the bore diameter of a .270, and of a .308..... Houston, we have a problem....
Since the parent case of the .270 was the 30-06, this would not be a rechamber, but a rebarrel. IMHO, the .270 is one of the most versatile rounds that there is- and danged close to what the M1 Garand was supposed to be. You may be better off to shop for a .308, and keep the .270. It really comes down to what IS it that you would like your rifle to do? |
If you don't like your .270, it's VERY easy to rebarrel to 30-06 or .308. You have to ask yourself if it's worth the expense to rebarrel vs the amount of ammo/reloading components that the same amount of money will buy. Keep in mind that .308 is a short action cartridge and you'll have to use a spacer in the magazine box to convert it to the shorter cartridge, while 30-06 is a simple rebarrel with no other changes.

Either way I go, keeping the .270 or changing will result in the purchase of a barrel and reloading equipment. There is just more options out there for other caliber then the .270. I am still considering all options at the moment.

As noted above, anything with the same rim diameter as the .270 (.473") will be a simple barrel swap, .280, 30-06, .308, 7MM-08, 35 Whelen, etc. keeping in mind the magazine issue that Stalkingbear mentioned. You have a ton of options.

If I were going to get rid of a great caliber then i would have to go with another great caliber. and make it a 30-06. Why put a short action cartridge (308win) into a long action gun?

You might look to see if one of these wildcats will work for you....
