Rusty Barrel
Outside of my new barrel for my 870 has a bit of rust. Doesn't look like it's gone through the bluing.

I know to lightly use 0000 steel wool with oil, my question is, what kind of oil do I use. Every damn bit of instructions I read only says to use "oil", but fails to mention what kind of oil. I have ten different kinds of olive oil in my pantry, will that work? I don't know because it doesn't say anywhere!!!!

Rant over, please help.

What kind of oil?
In all the years that my Father hunted and then sat down and cleaned his guns, He all ways used 3 in 1 oil. I can't remember him using any thing else except maybe homemade lard. He used the lard on his 22 bolt. It seems over time that it left a coating and the rifle never rusted. Back in the day farmers would brush lard on tools not being used to prevent rust. You might try L P S 3, It's a little thicker than most oils when you want to store your guns. Wills in da swamp in La. One Shot One Kill.... Have Gun Will Travel. God Bless

Thanks guys. Just got some cheap "bore klean" oil and it worked great! The whole barrel was coated in light rust, some places deeper than others. But the result is stunning, it looks like a completely brand new barrel, not a single sign that it's even ever been used!

You don't have any Rem Oil???

I thought every gun owner had a can of Rem Oil.

I use Break Free CLP. Works every time. Cleans - Lubricates - Protects. :D
