Removing silver solder from barrel
 

Have a Remington Mohawk 48 that has a 1/8" metal pad silver soldered onto the rear sight groove area of the receiver. This was done for a scope mount. I'd like to restore this back to where I can use this gun for shooting clays. Appearance is not all important. Planning on cold bluing it when I'm done. Can I simply reheat the area and remove the metal pad? Is there a way to remove the residual solder left behind?

Residual silver solder can be removed by heating it, and wiping the area with a folded clean cotton cloth while hot. A trace may be left where the metal was tinned- it can be buffed away. Silver solder will be harder than lead/tin solder.

If it is real silver solder then you will have to use alot of heat. Most likely it is soft solder.

Thanks for the input. Regardless whether it is silver or lead solder it will take a certain amount of heat to remove. I plan to go slow so i don't have more cosmetic damage than necessary. Really appreciate the advise.
