Default Remove rear sights

I am replacing the rear sights on the both my Ruger Single Six and Mark II. Both appear to be mounted in a dovetail. I know it will take some effort and penitrating oil to get them out. Question is, which direction? Right to left or left to right with the pistol being gripped as to shoot. Thanks.
