Quick Remington 870 question

recently got a Remington 870 express shotgun and today was my first time cleaning it. I dissassembled it fine, but I accidentally pressed the trigger and now the hammer can fall up and down in the receiver. I know that the hammer needs to be cocked in order to re-install the bolt group and forend. How do I manually cock the hammer?

Thanks!

Let me first to say.."keep your damn finger off the trigger". Good thing you were cleaning it and not loading it. ;)

The only reason I pulled the trigger was because I was trying to depress the action bar but it wouldn't budge... Stupid me "Oh lets press the trigger maybe that will help!" Obviously not. This has been a difficult first experience for me... I wish it was as simple as cleaning my .22... Clean the barrel, spray down the action and exterior and done.

Pop out the two cross pins and remove the trigger group. Manually re-cock the hammer and re-install the trigger group. Piece of cake.

When you remove the trigger group from the receiver the hammer will be right on top & easy to cock. Place on safe when reassembling so it won't happen again.

Thanks guys! Will I be able to re-assemble as usual once the hammer is cocked?

stalkingbear 07-31-2009 06:28 PM

That's correct. Just pay close attention to the placement of the action bar.

Alright, I got my trigger group back in and the hammer is cocked and the safety is on, but I can not seem to get the forend and bolt assembly back into the receiver. I know I am supposed to press the feed lips in, but the right one will not budge, and when I press the left one in nothing happens. Help?

Sound like is it time to take it to the smith and have him help you put it back together.

no no dont need a smith. the slide is a PAIN IN THE NECK to get back in. you gotta finesse it with the shell catchers and it will go back in. call up an older buddy and have him help you out. you can definetly get the slide back in, it just happens to be a pain. don't force anything, just finesse it. i know its vague but an older hunting buddy is a first option, dont go to the smith until you've exhausted all other options.
