I have recently become the new owner of a Winchester 94 Cowboy Commemorative. The receiver is engraved nickle plated and has unfortunately stared to oxidize. What is the best way to clean this up? I'm sure a rubbing compound would work, but I don't want to endanger the engraving, or leave any kind of swirl marks.

If it's nickel I would try semi chrome, it's a paste and it VERY low abrasive wise. I've never used it on nickel but have used it a bunch on chrome and they are similar hardness wise. It works very well and doesn't leave any swirl marks. You may be able to get it at auto parts stores but any local motorcycle shop should have it.

first try baking soda toothpaste on a felt pad, or bronze wool.

Toothpaste also works good in removing light surface rust from blued firearms too.
