Mosin straight bolt

Ok first I'm not a rifle guy. I'm just starting to get into them really so not to sure if this will work. I have an old mosin that's a great scout rifle. What I would like to see is if it's possible to modify it so you can pull the bolt straight back instead of having to twist it and if so is it legal? Sorry I'm not sure if it's called a straight bolt. Basically what I want to do is make it so I can pull the bolt straight back to rechamber instead of having to do the twisting motion.

I doubt it. Its possible I'm sure. But just get a swiss K31. It'll cost you a lot less money. You'd need to basically build a whole new gun to do what you want.

Agree with what he said. It is POSSIBLE to make a lever action fully automatic. Not easy, not cheap, not realistic. That turning action is what keeps the bolt from passing all the way thru your head when you fire.

For a relatively inexpensive straight pull action, get a K-31- and yes, they ARE fast to cycle.

You could have the bolt turned down. That would kind of make it seem like there is less travel.

The rotating bolt allows for the action to lock up and keep you alive. Study the design characteristics of bolt action firearms and see what I am referring to .

Thanks for the help guys. I understand the mechanics of the bolt and why you have to do the twist motion. I have seen a rifle (I believe it was a savage axis that a friend heavily modified) that he could pull the bolt straight back and chamber a round so it was still bolt action you just didn't have to do the twist.

Scott- there ARE straight pull bolt action rifles. They work in a variety of different ways- but they were DESIGNED that way from the start.

The 6mm Remington Lee Navy rifle, the Swiss K-31 are both straight pull, but totally different actions. One that is out there on the market fairly cheap right now is the Steyr Mannlicher 1895. Please note that is NOT 8mm Mauser. http://world.guns.ru/rifle/repeating-rifle/at/steyr-mannlicher-m95-e.html

The Blaser R93 is a strait pull modern rifle, as in new design.

What wouldn't be a bad idea I think, would be to take a Swiss, rebarrel it to 7.62x54r, and modify the bolt head. Dangerous? Maybe. But cool as hell.
