Default M98 action question

I have a 30/06 actioned M98 and I'm looking at doing a .458AccRel on it.
The question is this possible on this action or would I be better off trying to get say a 8mm action.
Is it worthwhile getting work done to open up the bolt face to accommodate the .458 or not and what other nasty surprises can I expect.

I also have a M17 action as well that was rebarrelled to a .243 and was wondering if that could be used or is this not very feasible for something as big as a .458?,regards

You shouldn't have any problem, there have been many M98's rebarreled to 458 Win Mag. The action will handle it a good smith can open up the bolt.

A M98 action is a M98 action whether it is barreled in .30-06 or 8mm. I don't really understand that part of your question. As far as rebarreling it to .458, it can be done.

I was under the impression that there was 2 different size bolt faces in the M98's small ring and large ring and the large ring was the preferred bolt face to have but if the bolt face/ring size doesn't matter then that'll do me.
Thanks for the reply's.

The rim and head size on the .30-06 and the 8mm Mauser is exactly the same, thus the bolt face will be the same. In fact, I make 8mm brass from .30-06 brass. Though there are some small ring 98's, most 98 Mausers are large ring and provide the preferred action for custom rifles. Mausers such as the 93, 95, and 96 are small ring, and though strong, they don't have the safer gas venting system that the 98 has, should a case head ever let go, though that is not a common malfunction. The 93, 95, and 96 are also cock on closing which seems to be less desirable for a custom Mauser. The 98 action you have should be suitable for your conversion once checked out and approved by a competent 'smith.

With the change over to the 458 you might have to open up the feed lips for the magazine box so the rounds will feed. It is a time consuming task. I would get the kunhousing shop book for the mauser it will help you out.

changes needed include but not limited to, opening bolt face, relieving feed rails, possible new mag box. Unless your DIYing it will probably cost more than a new one from CZ

I've been looking at the Zastava line of rifles as they're a very good copy of a M98 action and I can get 1 for around $1000 + so this may even be a better way to go again as all's it'll need is a AccRel reamer run up the chamber and everything else is basically there.
Thanks for the help so far fellas.
