Luger still fails to feed
A friends Luger that I am trying to fix is still giving me problems. Some one in the past re barreled a 1916 Erfurt to 30 kal Luger. Of course I don't know what else was done to it.
It cycles and feeds by hand perfectly but when fired, it shoots and ejects normally but the incoming round gets jammed up against the breech face in about a 45 degree angle. Most books say that current ammo is less powerful than the original so maybe taking a couple of coils off the main spring might help. I did this and it did seem to help with ejection but not the feeding. The spring may not be correct as I still have 20 coils left on the spring and I have been told that 17 coils is the norm for a 30 kal. It seems like the toggle is not going back far enough to pick up the incoming round but if this is so, how come it goes back far enough to lock the toggle on an empty mag?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you've already clipped the spring I assume you have a new spring to replace it if you go too far. Try clipping 1 more coil off and see if that helps. If it seems like you need to go more after test firing clip 1 more off. I wouldn't go further than 2 more coils total. It also sounds like you have a mag problem to me but I'm NOT a luger expert by far. In fact the more I think about it, the more it sounds like a mag problem.

Fixed Luger
Well I finally got the Luger shooting. Someone had taken a real nice matching number 1916 Erfurt and put a 30 Kal. Luger barrel on it,and it was jamming every shot. Changed magazines, no improvement, changed ammo, same result. Started cutting coils off the spring with no improvement. Stopped after taking 3 coils off to get more advice. Someone wrote me and said that his 30 Kal. Luger only had 17 coils on it and I realized that I had taken 3 coils off and still had 22 coils left. So I took it down to 19 coils and tried it and it ran like a sewing machine. How someone got that spring in the pistol, is a puzzle to me. Took me 2 days to get back in after I took it out the first time.

Remember nothing is foolproof as fools get more creative when challenged.

Thanks to all who gave me advice
