Is there anyone who can rebarrel a Springfield 03-A3 action from .30-06 to .25-06? The kicker is that a person can buy a new Stevens or Marlin for around $300... so it seems like it might be difficult to get this old action rebarreled for that kind of money. Just want it to be a hunting rifle, nothing too fancy, but with a 24" sporting barrel if possible.

You should be able to get it rebarreled for that but to do it up right is going to cost a lot more than you'll ever be able to get out of it. Forget about using a scope for that price.

Depending on the manufacturer, the condition, and if it's still in all it's milsurp wrapping, I wouldn't touch it! It's worth more money as an original Springfield than it would be sporterized. I inherited an unfired Smith Corona from my dad. He traded the military stock for a beautiful Walnut Monte Carlo stock back in 63'. It's got almost zero collectors value without the original stock, even though it's never been fired. Unless you want a super long range varmint rifle, why would you want a 25-06 instead of a 30-06?

Rebarreling an 03A3 is about as easy as you can get. Any local gunsmith can do it handily. The magazine box & boltface don't have to be changed at all as it's a straightforward swap. Simple thread/chamber/headspace. Expect to pay 120-150$ for the labor + the cost of the barrel. By having your action rebarreled, you can also take advantage of a top quality barrel & truing up the action by your gunsmith (extras costs but worth it in added precision).

If you're severely budget limited, it would be best to just buy a Marlin XL-7 in 25-06 & leave the 03A3 alone for now.

I generaly spend $500 on a re-barrel. Purchase a good Douglas bbl. Thread and chamber, cut the extractor grove. True the action, lap the lugs smooth or replace the trigger. It isn't a place to save money. At least not any more.
I would check the used gun market.

I bought a transition win 70 in 30-06 that had the bbl cut to 22". It kicked like a mule, and I wanted a 3000 yd deer rifle so I had it rebarreled to 25-06. Been too long to remember the cost. Recoil was reduced with lighter bullets and it would stretch out there several yds further than the 30-06. Perfect.

I killed 3 deer with it, longest shot was 80 yds.

Like have your buddy stand down by the deer and watch it fall over before he ever hears the BOOM.

Course 3,000 yard windage he might have to stand back a little farther.
