Default J.C. Higgins 60

I have been working on this shotgun, replacing some parts and when I took it out to shoot it it fired but the bolt never retracted back. I manually pulled it back but it did not bring the spent shell with it. Any ideas on the cause? I replaced the mag.spring follower, mag tube cap forend and forend cap so the internal parts haven't been changed.

Semi-Auto? Check if the gas seals are installed correctly (in other words, flip them around). Rem 1100's would have the same problem if their gas seals are not installed correctly.

J C Higgins mdl 60 appears to be a High Standard Supermatic.

Manual here for the mdl 60: http://stevespages.com/pdf/jchiggins_60.pdf
High Standard Supermatic manual:
http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/histandard_c1200.pdf

Check the chamber for rust pits, roughness and crud. If the chamber is
rough the fired shell will stick, your action won't operate, and you won't
be able to remove the fired shell manually.
