I did this, how did I do?

Not sure this really qualifies as "gunsmithing" but it was fun.

I wanted a tailess grip safety on my Colt Ghost. I found a Wilson's drop in beavertail for a Gov. 1911. This meant the tail would already be to long for my Commander 1911, so a good way to start.

I ground the tail off with my grinder, then rough sanded, then fine sanded and polished best I could with what I have.

It looks like you did a nice job. How long did it take you?

jca1 05-30-2010 02:23 AM

Thanks Rick. I guess it took about a hour.

Very Cool. It's nice to get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Looks fine, jca1. I would have finished it on a buffer with some good polish to get rid of the sanding lines and try to get it a little more even. Then again, I am a tad anal when it comes to working metal. Looks good enough to pass as almost factory. Nice job. :D

I'm going to consider that a huge compliment from you skullcrusher, especially for a total rookie like me.

I wish I had a buffer and such, I'd sure try it.

All in all it looks to be a pretty nice job. What matters most is if you are happy with it. Is so then it's as good as it needs to be.:)

Nice job. A relatively inexpensive buffer is a Dremel or copy, with a felt polishing bob, and white jeweler's rouge. It is also the only time I will use a Dremel on a gun.

But…but… a Colt Talo Ghost Commander???? One of 400, did you keep the old beaver tail safety?

Yes, of course I did.
