Default FAL Barrel length question.

Hi all. I have an FAL, Imbel metric receiver. The barrel length is 20 inches, with a flash hider that adds around 2-3 inches to the length. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on having the barrel taken down to 18, or possibly 16 inches, and having it crowned and/or adapted to fit something like a vortex flash hider.
I was wondering if anyone had experience with this, or knows how shortening the barrel length from 20 to 16 inches effects the ballistics. Like I said, anyone with experience or know how feel free to chime in.

safe shooting.

Sorry, no experience with THAT particular rifle,
Couple of things- ballistics, muzzle blast, operation

For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2001-2500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2501-3000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3001-3500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3501-4000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

Second, Barrel length is pretty well set up to use standard loading. Significantly shorter barrels tend to become flamethrowers. Look at the Brit #5 Jungle Carbine in .303 Enfield. Muzzle blast that makes you cringe.

For a gas operated firearm, gas is diverted when bullet passes gas port in bbl, continues being diverted until bullet leaves barrel. Removing 4 inches of barrel reduces time you are tapping gas. Less than X (whateverindahellxis) you may ot have enough impulse to operate action. Rifles with an adjustable gas system can compensate for that TO A DEGREE.
