Cutting a shotgun barrel
What's the best way to cut a shotgun barrel down?

winds-of-change 03-20-2012 02:28 PM

I would research that thoroughly before doing anything. There are laws as to how short a shotgun barrel can be.

Here's a previous thread on the same subject. Read it!!

Also just a heads up, not only is that going to give a wider spread, but it's going to give you a louder pop when you pull the trigger.

Do it wrong and your pattern will go to crap.

my question is for what purpose? why would you want to make the barrel shorter? if it has a screw in choke, you will lose that, if not, all the choking is done in the last 2-3 inches of the muzzle, you would lose that. if the shotgun were old enough, it could lose value due to cutting the barrel. and as WOC said there is a legal limit to how short a barrel can be cut down to. go below this, and there could be some very intense agents giving you a visit.

I guess you mean to shorten.........If you don't have the tools and the know how let someone that does do the job. e.g. gun smith and keep it legal.........Oh by the by don't attempt to shoot mag. loads after you cut the barrel.... It might go boom in your face......

Sawing off a shotgun barrel is easy. Measure twice cut once, with a tight, stiff hacksaw with new blade, make sure to cut straight across, not at a angle. I suggest cut a lil longer than minimal length legal.

Now, make sure you really want to do this, as it will surely ruin the value. If it is a older, classic shotty,, I wouldn't do it.
18 inches is the minimum length round here,, check local laws as mentioned above, mismeasure and you can end up with a felony, and loose all current and future guns.... be careful.
I have a Remington 870 that I sawed off to 18 1/4", and she works fine, kicks alil harder now but that was expected.
One more thing the end where you cut the barrel will be more susceptible to rust/corrosion so be sure to take some fine sandpaper and sand edge every no and then, oil accordingly. ..

Why would one want to cut a barrel on a shotgun?

A lot of guys I know take old interarm shot guns (about $50 at your local pawn shop) and cut them down to 20". They use it as their home defense weapon. You don't have to worry about aiming in the dark with those.

If you have a pipe cutter you can put it on your shotgun barrel at the desired length tighten it slightly on the barrel but do not crank it down, go around the barrel a few times then remove it, you will have a line all the way around the barrel to use to keep you cutting even and straight. Do not try to cut the barrel off with the pipe cutter as the barrel will end up slightly deformed on the end only use this for marking purposes.
