I think you are. This piece should be down normally and has no spring. It is not held in place by the thumb safety.

There are actually two of these. One is held in place by the hammer pin and one by the sear pin. When you pull the trigger the bottom one pushes the top one up. The top one then pushes the "plunger" in the slide to release the firing pin.
JCA1 that's the part I'm talking about so it sounds like I'm ok. I'm going to field strip and check it out tomorrow. Thanks so much!

drop a pencil down the barrel (eraser first). Being careful where you aim and keeping the eraser against the breech face, pull the trigger. If the pencil comes out the things should be okay.

If you did not remove the hammer you did not alter the location of that part.
