Colt 1903 fires when chambering a round

I got a 1903 32 cal. ACP from my dad. It was in pieces so I assembled it (tough to do until you figure out that the hammer won't go in unless you squeeze the trigger and grip safety real hard).
I put a couple rounds in the magazine, brought it out back and when I chambered a round it fired. Scared the ---- out of me. So -- I tried it again and the same thing happened if I was squeezing the grip. Tried it once more with my hand clear of the grip and it was fine. Now I would have thought the sear and hammer weren't engaging but --- I unloaded it and tried and the hammer fired.
Tried this a bunch of times and the hammer always fired. The firing pin spring seems strong --- I can move it forward (when the receiver is off) but it has good resistance. Any thoughts on why it is doing this?

Do not load it until you can take it to a smith.
There may have been a reason that it was disassembled.

Thanks --- Thats what I plan on. I'm not a gunsmith but pretty good with things like this --- just puzzles me.

It sounds like a worn sear or sear spring to me-I echo taking it to a smith.
