Default cold blueing question

hey guys, I bought a 1986 marlin 30-30 with almost all the blueing gone for 100 bucks, tore it down completely,,I purchased a o.t.c birchwood Cayce blueing kit and followed instructions ,remove rust and or all oil, dirt, grease, etc. apply, hit with steel wool, apply more, hit again , etc. until the blue is to your desired darkness, well,, it got dark blue but it didn't stick in certain spots and it seems it rubs off fairly easy,, can anybody give me any tips on making this at home blueing kit work correctly, ive been rubbing and appling this crap for a week now every day after work for 3 or 4 hrs and im ready to give up, im almost out of the blueing I purchased anyway,, so is there a different brand any1 would recommend, I cant afford to have someone dip it, if I could ,, I would've went that route,,, thnx for any input
