Bluing help!!!

Is it possible to clean, polish, and blue a cast iron frame off a pistol?

Marlinman 01-04-2012 03:20 AM

Yes but it takes alot of very setious heat. Paint will/would be a better choice unless you have access to some very serious industrial heaters/ovens

Ok so that means cold bluing is out of the question?

Marlinman 01-04-2012 04:32 AM

Ya pretty much. What are you blueing it for-show or use?

Well I have another post on here about a Charter Arms Explorer II. I put some pictures up and that's what I'm doing, is trying to fix it up because I am wanting to get into gunsmithing and a guy at a local trade show handed it to me and said here's your first project. He just gave it to me. So that's the plan.

I dont think thats actual blueing but looks like cast iron lacquer. It isnt laquer though- its actually kinda like teflon on newer skillets.

Any refinish requires a lot of prep work.

Take a look at AlumaHyde. An air-dry coating.

Thats aluminum not cast iron. You can not blue alum. You can use aluma-black or paint or anodize.

Brownells have some bake on laquer finishes that hold up preaty well. best to glass bead it for texture and and a surface for the laquer to hold on to.
My 2 cents
F.K.
